Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Interdisciplinary Studies Non-Certification is a degree program which does not lead to a teaching certification at the undergraduate level but does provide a foundation in elementary education for post-baccalaureate pathways to certification. A student following this course of study will take the general education core, the Interdisciplinary Studies major, specialization coursework for a minor in reading and the special education course sequence. Students completing the IDS Non-Certification major may elect to add an additional course to earn the special education minor. Students desiring teacher certification can apply for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, offered at night through the Dreeben School of Education.

The Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies Non-Certification includes a minor in Reading and an optional minor in Special Education.

A student following this course of study will take:

  1. UIW Core Curriculum: The Core Curriculum is an integrated and sequenced course of study, which constitutes 43 semester hours of a student's degree plan. Many of these courses may be transferred from a community college.
  2. Interdisciplinary Studies Major: These courses provide the general foundation of all elementary teaching.
  3. Reading Minor: The reading minor is incorporated into the IDS degree-only program and is required for all IDS majors. These courses provide an overview of literacy instruction, including emergent literacy, vocabulary development, comprehension development, dyslexia, English language acquisition, disciplinary literacy, and children’s literature.
  4. Special Education Course Sequence: IDS majors are required to complete the first three courses of a Special Education sequence. They can choose to complete the Special Education minor by taking the additional course, Advocacy for Exceptional Learners. The Special Education coursework provides an overview of special education history, legislation, advocacy, disabilities, and professional responsibilities.

5. Electives (23 hours)

A minimum of 23 hours of electives are required. Students should work with their advisors to ensure a minimum of 36 hours of upper-division credits have been earned.
